Abstract

The paper is design to address some problems that affect the environment for national transformation and sustainable development through geography education. Among the common problems are as follows: the problem of poor utilization of geographic and environmental education acquired by most of the Nigerians. Meanwhile, others are ecological like deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, soil salinity, alkalinity and desiccation. The paper looked at the causes, consequences, magnitude and give some recommendations such as geography education needs to be teaches in schools, environmental awareness should be encouraged in the schools and the community. The paper also stated that, the attentions of government and non-governmental organization is needed to encourage forest plantation, management and control for national transformation. This is useful if some early preventive measures like tree planting, construction and clearing of drainage, use of sorghum(sudangrass) to control soil salinity, level ground and effective seedbed should be introduce against soil salinity, alkalinity and desiccation.
